How painful is getting a dental implant?
Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how manageable implant treatment feels. The area is thoroughly numbed with the latest fast-acting local anaesthetic before your implant is placed, so you should only feel pressure and movement rather than sharp pain.
For nervous patients or more complex procedures, IV or inhalation (RA) sedation is available to help you relax and remember little of the appointment.
Afterwards, it’s normal to experience some soreness and swelling for a few days, similar to having a tooth extracted. This is usually well controlled with over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen and paracetamol, along with careful aftercare instructions.
Most people return to normal daily activities within 24–48 hours, avoiding strenuous exercise while the area settles. If you follow the advice you’re given, discomfort should steadily improve rather than get worse, and our team is always on hand if you’re concerned.
