What is recovery actually like from dental implant surgery?

Recovery from implant surgery is usually smoother than many people expect. For the first 24–72 hours, you can anticipate some swelling, mild bruising and tenderness around the site, which is normally well controlled with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief and cold compresses.

You’ll be advised to avoid smoking, strenuous exercise and very hot foods, and to keep the area clean using gentle rinses rather than brushing directly over the stitches. Most people return to desk-based work and everyday activities within a day or two, taking care not to disturb the surgical site.

The deeper healing, where the implant bonds with the bone, happens quietly beneath the gum over several months, and generally doesn’t affect your routine.
