Let Me Tell You a Love Story
Every good love story has a moment when everything changes — a spark, a turn, a choice that shapes a lifetime.
Mine began in June 1985, when I graduated as a dentist from the prestigious University of Pretoria in South Africa… and fell hopelessly, irreversibly in love with dentistry.
Little did I know that the second great love of my life — my husband — was waiting for me during an engineering detour.
Yes, I studied engineering for a year before dentistry.
Did I learn physics?
Yes.
Chemistry?
Yes.
But most importantly… I learned who I’d marry.
And honestly, that’s the best exam result I’ve ever received.
Chapter 1: Falling in love with teeth
Right after qualifying, I plunged into postgraduate studies — pathology, geriatric dentistry, paediatric dentistry, and any subject that made my curiosity flutter.
By 1986–87, I had collected advanced training like gemstones.
I then opened my private practice in Sandton, Johannesburg — attached to my home, so dentistry was both my profession and my neighbour.
I offered everything from Crowns and Bridges to Implants, and cherished the trust of every patient who stepped through my door.
Chapter 2: A new country, a new life
In August 2001, my husband and I immigrated to England.
Starting over is an adventure only love can fuel.
I worked in an NHS practice in Swindon and settled into the rhythm of British life — coats, tea, and all.
Around this time, I deepened my skill in orthodontics.
I completed renowned courses with Dr Skip Truitt in orthopaedic orthodontics and Derek Mahoney in the Damon system, learning the subtle art of moving teeth with gentle, elegant forces.
And in 2003, my orthodontic love story expanded again:
I trained in Invisalign and became a comprehensive Invisalign provider, embracing the beauty of clear aligners long before they became the global phenomenon they are today.
Since 2003, I’ve been designing straighter, more confident smiles using Invisalign — a modern, minimally visible way to transform alignment and harmony.
Chapter 3: Implants, artistry, and technology
In 2002–2003, I trained at the prestigious Tatum Institute under Dr Hilt Tatum, the pioneer behind dozens of transformative Dental Implant techniques, Nerve lateralisation, and Sinus lifts and grafts.
Learning from him was a privilege and a masterclass in surgical artistry.
To complement this, I joined the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD), attending numerous courses and becoming a full member, further refining my aesthetic eye.
Chapter 4: Sedation, TMJ, and the irresistible pull of innovation
Since 2003, I’ve been a proud SAAD member (Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry), and in 2009, I earned my postgraduate sedation certificate from UCL — a programme as enlightening as it was empowering.
My fascination with jaw joints and bite mechanics led me into advanced TMJ coursework.
I invested in cutting-edge tools such as the Biopac jaw tracker and the T-Scan occlusal analysis system, even travelling to America for a week to further my training.
Every innovation adds another layer to the care I can offer.
Most recently, I completed the Avant Garde residency in cosmetic dentistry, mastering same-day porcelain veneer techniques and beautifully precise injection-moulded composites.
Chapter 5: The other great love story
Let’s return to that engineering class…
Because that is where I met the man who would become the steady heartbeat of my life — and eventually, of my practice.
My husband is an engineer with a bachelor’s degree, an MBA, and electrical qualifications (NICEIC).
He can fix compressors, calm anxious patients, and remind me to drink water — sometimes simultaneously.
After I purchased my practice in 2005, he became essential to its success.
In true love-story fashion, he didn’t stop there: he trained as a dental nurse and became sedation-qualified — an incredibly rare and invaluable combination.
He supports me after hours, on weekends, and in all the ways that make my work possible.
Chapter 6: Why I’m still in love today
Decades after graduating, I remain enchanted by dentistry — by the blend of science and art, the power of technology, and the simple joy of restoring someone’s confidence.
I love learning.
I love growing.
And I love seeing the transformation that careful, compassionate dentistry can bring.
This is my love story — of teeth, technology, tenderness, Invisalign smiles… and the wonderful man I met because I once wandered into an engineering class.
