Dental Implants FAQ

What are dental implants?

An implant is an artificial tooth root placed in your jawbone, fusing with the bones in your oral cavity, making them more or less permanent.

How long do implants last?

Dental implant treatment has been used to replace missing teeth since the early 1960s and is one of the dentistry industry’s most researched and advanced treatment areas.

Recent research shows that over 95% of well-placed and looked-after implants should last a lifetime.

Is the implant procedure painful?

Local anaesthetic is used to carry out the procedure so that there is no pain during the surgery. If you prefer, Sedation is also available.

What are the most common problems with implants?

Over 95% of dental implant procedures result in success.

One of the problems that can occur is the implant failing while in the healing stage, which means having to place a new implant.

However, poor oral hygiene or gum disease can also contribute to implant failure.

How are Dental Implants fitted?

When you see us for an initial consultation, we’ll discuss what you’re looking for and advise you on what different implant solutions suit you.

We will then undertake an oral health assessment. Good oral hygiene and healthy gums give your operation the best chance of success and help avoid dental infections and more severe complications.

If you have any oral health problems, such as tooth decay, gingivitis, or gum problems, our Dental Hygienist will help you treat them before the surgery.

High-resolution 3D scan

Our state-of-the-art CBTC scanning machine will take multiple scans and x-rays of your mouth and jaw. The digital scanner produces precise and high-resolution 3D images of your mouth, including teeth, jaws, soft tissue, and bones – all with high levels of detail to enable precision planning to help fit your implant.

On the day of your surgery, we use a simple procedure to place the titanium screw in your jawbone. We’ll then place a temporary crown or bridge while you wait for the implant to heal. If you currently wear dentures, you can continue wearing them.

After your appointment, you may feel slightly swollen or tender for a few days. When choosing a date for a dental implant procedure, we advise you to avoid significant social engagements.

The human body tolerates titanium very well, and the implants will bond with your jawbone over the next 4-6 months. Once fully healed, we can fit your new permanent Crown, Bridge or Denture. From start to finish, the entire procedure takes around 6 months.

Dental Bone Grafts in Plymouth

What is a dental bone graft?

Dental bone grafts involve grafting (adding) synthetic material to your jawbone so that there’s enough bone for your implant to be fitted.

How painful is a dental bone graft?

Local anaesthetic is used to carry out the procedure so that there is no pain during the surgery. If you prefer, sedation is also available.

Afterwards, there may be some slight pain, discomfort, or swelling for a few days, which can be treated with over-the-counter pain relief.

How long after a bone graft can I have the dental implant fitted?

The bone graft takes 3-6 months to heal and harden enough to receive the dental implant.

Where do you get the bone from?

We use the latest technique for stimulating new bone growth – a stem cell-based synthetic material similar to your natural bone. As your new, natural bone regenerates, it replaces the synthetic material.

Sinus Lifts in Plymouth

What is a Sinus Lift?

You may need a sinus lift procedure if there’s not enough bone height in your upper jaw or your sinuses are too close to your jaw for dental implants to fit.

A Sinus Lift is where synthetic bone is added between your jaw and the sinuses on either side of your nose so that there’s enough bone for your implant to be fitted. The sinus membrane has to be moved upwards or “lifted” to make room for the new bone.

How painful is a Sinus Lift procedure?

Local anaesthetic is used to carry out the procedure so that there is no pain during the surgery. If you prefer, sedation is also available.

Afterwards, there may be some slight pain, discomfort, or swelling for a few days, which can be treated with over-the-counter pain relief.

After the procedure, please try not to blow your nose or sneeze for the first two weeks, as this may cause the sinus lift to fail.

Would having a Sinus Lift change my facial appearance?

If you’ve had teeth missing for a while, a sinus lift with implants will cause your jaw bone to start reversing bone loss and the sunken look that goes with it.

How long after a Sinus Lift can I have a dental implant fitted?

Though you will feel fine within a couple of weeks, the sinus lift must heal and harden for 3-6 months before the implant can be fitted.

Can a Sinus Lift fail?

Although most sinus lift operations are successful, they can fail if the synthetic bone material fails to integrate with your natural bone.

One of the biggest dangers is the added bone material becoming dislodged during healing, so you are told for the first two weeks not to blow your nose or try not to sneeze.

Where do you get the bone from for a Sinus Lift?

We use the latest technique for stimulating new bone growth – a stem cell-based synthetic material similar to your natural bone. As your new, natural bone regenerates, it replaces the synthetic material.
